Virtual Desktop Logoff Behaviour - You should specify what happens to a desktop when an end user logs off or is disconnected from a virtual machine by configuring the logoff behavior properties. You can modify logoff behavior settings after creating a desktop group by using the Modify desktop group properties task in the AppCenter. The following table lists the options found in the logoff behavior properties for assigned and pooled desktop group types.

Desktop Group
Type
Logoff Behaviours Considerations
Assigned
Desktops

  • Leave powered on. (Default). The desktop is left on and ready for the end user to reconnect.
  • Suspend. The desktop is suspended until the next time the end user tries to reconnect.
  • Shut down. The desktop is shut down and restarts the next time the end user attempts to reconnect.
Note: Desktops configured to suspend or shut down at logoff can also be configured to be suspended if the session is disconnected.
  • Leave the desktop in the 'on' state to provide end users with quick access to the desktop. If desired, configure a disconnect timer, which determines how long a desktop can remain locked before the session is logged off. For more information about disconnect timers, see the XenDesktop Administrator's Guide at eDocs.citrix.com.
  • Suspended or shut down desktops can free up resources on the host server when they are not in use.
Pooled
Desktops

  • Do nothing. (Default). The desktop is available to other end users when the current end user logs off.
  • Restart. The desktop is restarted at end user logoff and made available to other end users.

  • The default option (Do nothing) is usually appropriate only for desktop images that prevent end user customization because any changes made to the desktop during the session are retained.
  • The restart logoff behavior is recommended to provide end user with logons with clean desktops for each session.

User-Driven Desktop Restarts - You can provide end users with the ability to restart a desktop that is unresponsive, taking a long time to connect, or failing to launch. However, the end user must be aware that all unsaved work is lost if the desktop is restarted during a session. The ability for end users to restart their desktop can lead to a reduction in the number of calls to the help desk and can provide end users the support they need in a more timely manner.
You can enable user-driven desktop restarts by first selecting the appropriate desktop group within the AppCenter console and then selecting the Enable user-driven desktop restart option from the Common Tasks pane.
Note: Ensure that all end users who have access to the user-driven desktop restart option are aware that their unsaved work will be lost if they elect to restart their desktop during a session.
The procedure for end users to restart their desktops differs depending on whether end users are connecting to full-screen-only desktops or desktops displayed in the Window-view mode.
The following table lists available desktop presentation modes, along with the restart options and the configuration procedures for each.
