XenDeskop Manages Collections of similar VMs as Catalogs

- Hosting Infrastructure

- Storage

- Level of User Control & Usage Scenario

Catalogs are further subdivided into Desktop Groups

- Represent sets of VMs which are allocated to Users and Groups

Five machine types for creating Catalogs

- Pooled (pooled random / pooled static)

"You'll get whatever VM is next available when you login, and we'll discard the changes you made to it when you logout."

- Dedicated

"This new VM is yours, forever, as are your changes."

- Existing

"Here's your old VM back, now managed with XenDesktop."

-Physical

"It's like a VM, but it's actually a blade PC!"

- Streamed

"Now we're delivering desktops in real-time!"

Two Desktop group types

- Shared - Created from Pooled-Random and Streamed Machine Types

- Private - Created from other machine types

Golden Desktop image

- joined to the domain and running

- if using ESX, VMware tools must be installed and running

- install XenDesktop Agent (it needs vmware tools)
