Tech Tips: VMware vSphere® with Operations Management
vSphere 5.5 Install Pt. 1: Introduction
vSphere 6.5 install
- dowload ISOs from VMware
VMware-VCSA-all-6.5.0-5178943.iso
VMware-VIM-all-6.5.0-5178943.iso
VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201701001-4887370.x86_64.iso
- install ESXi (VMvisor-Installer)
- add NIC drivers (see Network cards not detected on ESX host article)
- go to https://<ESXi_host> and save ESXi certificate as well as CA
- set timeout to off
Click small arrow pointing down next to root@IP > Settings > Application Timeout > Off
- mount VCSA ISO & run D:\vcsa-ui-installer\win32\installer.exe
- go through wizard (see attached screenshots)
- once installed, log on to ESXi host direct and set RAM to 4GB on vCSA VM
- start vCSA VM again
- https://<vCenterIP> & click Download trusted root CA certificates
- also save vCenter certificate
- run MMC Console > Certificates > Computer
> import CA root (<< BOTH ESXi & vCSA) to Computer Trusted Root Certification authorities store
> import vCSA and ESXi certificates to Computer personal store
- restart browser & test (IE, Chrome, etc.)
- login to vCenter and add ESXi host
- open console to vCSA & install VMRC - https://<vCSA>/vmrc/VMware-VMRC.msi
- create VMFS Datastores & Add NFS shares
- set timeout on vCSA & enable WinSCP
open console to vCSA, log on, type shell
change line session.timeout = 120 to session.timeout = 0
save file

vCenter Service Appliance 6.5 Tips and Tricks
- (optional) set copy & paste (see Clipboard Copy and Paste does not work in vSphere Client article)
- in vSphere web client click Home icon and select administration, click Licenses under Licensing, select Licenses tab and add ESXi & vCenter licenses (vSphere with Operations Management 6 Enterprise Plus & vCenter Server 6 Standard)
- click Assets tab, then Hosts and Assign License...
- select vCenter Server systems and Assign License...

Find out if your ESXi host has graphics card such as NVIDIA Tesla M6 (GM204GL)
- List all hardware on PCI bus
- grep lines with "VGA" search term and 17 before and after the line
- grep 2nd time just to get lines with Vendor and Device
- alternatively just get 7 lines before and 1 after the search term NVIDIA
